Phosphoric acid

Phosphoric acid can be added to fertilizers and soils to increase the concentration of phosphorus available for plant and crop uptake. Phosphorus is an essential nutrient for plant growth, strength, and health.

Additionally, phosphoric acid can be used as a sequestrant; it binds to divalent cations of iron, calcium, magnesium, and copper to prevent their precipitation. The metal ions are inactivated by the acid and therefore cannot form mineral deposits. In lead pipes, it forms a thin film that coats the pipe surface to prevent lead from leaching into drinking water.
