Biological processing is a key component of wastewater treatment that uses microorganisms like bacteria and protozoa to remove nutrients and contaminants from wastewater. Compounds like potassium, nitrogen, iron, calcium, fats, sugars, and proteins can be present in wastewater and are all used by microorganisms to grow and carry out cellular respiration. If the microorganisms are provided with a favourable environment, they are better able to remove undesirable compounds from wastewater.
For this reason, bio-feed can be introduced to increase nutrient concentrations and better support biological activity.
